Today is the anniversary of the Lake Peigneur Drilling disaster – November 20, 1980.
When an oil company miscalculated and drilled into a salt mine in Louisana, the resultant whirlpool sucked in the drilling platform, eleven barges, many trees and 65 acres (26 ha) of the surrounding terrain. Amazingly, all miners, workers and a fisherman survived the disaster, but a number of dogs were reportedly killed.
The moral – check your measurements.
